The Fully Charged team visited Bosch's TransforMotion tech fest at Somerset House, focusing on the future of electrified, autonomous, and connected mobility. The highlight for host Jonny Smith was the "e-axle," a compact, scalable unit (50-300 kW) integrating power electronics, motor, and gearbox, promising a turnkey solution for OEMs to electrify vehicles more efficiently. He also explored Bosch's 48-volt powertrain system, showcased in various applications from scooters to sports bikes and even a small city car, emphasizing its scalability and use of automotive-proven components. The EZ Mile autonomous shuttle, a driverless electric minibus designed for first/last-mile transport, was also demonstrated, highlighting its sensor technology and operational parameters. While the autonomy aspect had some perceived "weirdness," Smith found the e-axle particularly compelling for its potential to reduce costs and complexity in vehicle electrification, making it a significant takeaway from the event.
