The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX was put to the test on the TTC Hill Test, and the results were largely disappointing for off-road capability. Despite its powerful Hybrid MAX powertrain offering 366 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, the vehicle struggled significantly with approach angles, particularly the 16.9-degree limit which proved too restrictive. The stock highway tires also hindered performance. While the AWD system, powered by electric motors front and rear without a mechanical driveshaft, showed promise and performed adequately in less extreme conditions like those tested in Hawaii, it failed to conquer the steeper, more challenging Texas hill. The vehicle experienced repeated issues, including hybrid system overheating warnings and an inability to modulate power effectively when attempting to left-foot brake or utilize off-road modes like 'Rock and Dirt'. The reviewer concluded that the Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX's AWD system is primarily designed for wet weather, slippery conditions, and on-road performance, rather than genuine off-road excursions, deeming the hill test a "fail" for this specific application.
