The 2023 Toyota Prius and Prius Prime represent a dramatic departure from the nameplate's traditional image, boasting a stunning, sleek design that is genuinely attractive. Performance is significantly improved, with the Prime model offering 220 system horsepower and a quick 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds, while the standard hybrid models provide up to 196 horsepower. The interior is also modernized, featuring a digital instrument cluster and an available 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 adds a comprehensive suite of driver aids. However, the redesign introduces some compromises. Rear seat headroom and cargo capacity are reduced compared to the previous generation, and the placement of the digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel is a significant ergonomic flaw, often blocking the driver's view. Interior materials, particularly on lower trims, can feel less premium than expected for the price point.
