Consumer Reports' latest reliability survey reveals significant shifts in the automotive landscape. Tesla makes a notable leap, entering the top 10 for new car reliability, a stark contrast to its past struggles with build quality issues on the Model 3 and Y. The brand has seemingly mastered its manufacturing processes, mirroring legacy automakers. However, this positive trend for new Teslas does not extend to their used counterparts, where the brand ranks last, indicating a divergence between initial build quality and long-term durability. Mazda, once a strong performer in used car reliability, has seen a decline in new car rankings due to the introduction of new platforms and technologies like the CX-90. Toyota continues its reign as the most reliable brand, attributed to its conservative, evolutionary design approach. Electrification, in general, presents challenges, with EVs and plug-in hybrids showing 80% more problems than gas cars, primarily due to new and unproven technologies. Hybrids, however, emerge as the sweet spot, benefiting from the reliability of established automakers and mature technology. Rivian, while scoring exceptionally high in owner satisfaction, ranks last in new car reliability, highlighting a disconnect between owner expectations and actual vehicle dependability.
