The Rivian R1T underwent the "Ike Gauntlet" towing test, a rigorous evaluation of its capabilities. During the downhill segment, the reviewer noted that while regenerative braking was active, it was less effective than anticipated, only regaining 2% battery (4 miles of range) over an 8-mile descent. This limited regeneration meant the R1T could not complete the uphill climb without a charge. A stop at an Electrify America station provided a partial charge, adding 54 kWh (reported by the station) to reach 51% battery. The uphill climb showcased the R1T's exceptional acceleration, reaching 60 mph rapidly even while towing. However, a significant issue arose when the cruise control system disconnected, forcing manual speed maintenance. Despite this glitch and the limited regen, the cabin remained remarkably quiet (61 decibels), and the ride was stable and comfortable. The reviewer concluded that while the R1T offers impressive power and a refined driving experience, its regenerative braking efficiency in towing scenarios needs improvement for such demanding tests.
