Toyota is executing a significant strategic shift in its North American manufacturing, particularly impacting its key plants in Kentucky and Indiana. The core of this change involves increased flexibility in battery pack assembly across multiple plants, allowing Toyota to adapt rapidly to market demands for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and BEVs. Notably, the planned three-row BEV SUV for Indiana is being relocated to Kentucky, while Indiana will focus on other models. The Grand Highlander and Lexus TX will continue production in Indiana's West Plant, with the Grand Highlander eventually moving to the East Plant. Kentucky will see the Camry take over the ES line, and will also become the production hub for two three-row BEV SUVs (one for Toyota, potentially the Highlander EV, and one for Lexus, possibly the TX successor, and even a Subaru variant), with potential plug-in hybrid variants also expected. The RAV4 remains in Kentucky due to tariff considerations. This move towards localized battery production and flexible assembly lines is highlighted as a major competitive advantage for Toyota, enabling them to navigate fluctuating market and political demands more effectively than competitors.
