The Schumacher SEV1600 series offers a 50-amp EV charger with adjustable amperage, available in hardwired, Nema 1450, or Nema 650 plug configurations, all priced at $649. While the unit boasts a robust build, Nema 3/IP66 rating, and an excellent, unique connector holster that accommodates Tesla adapters, its smart features fall short. The accompanying "Schupower" app proved unreliable, failing to register charging sessions in multiple attempts and mirroring issues reported by other users. Durability testing revealed a significant drawback: the cable is excessively thick and performs poorly in cold weather, becoming stiff and difficult to manage. On the positive side, the connector itself is well-made with useful side LEDs, and the holster's ambidextrous design and adapter compatibility are standout features. The unit also passed the automatic restart test. However, the need for user assembly of the cable and plug, similar to the ChargePoint Home Flex, is a minor inconvenience. Despite its average price for a smart charger, the app's unreliability and the poor cold-weather cable performance detract from its overall value.
