The Aiways U5, a Chinese electric SUV, was put to the ultimate test on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Despite initial skepticism and concerns about its suitability for such a demanding track, the U5 surprised the reviewers. While acknowledging it's not a performance vehicle, the SUV demonstrated surprising capability, managing to keep pace with and even pass several faster cars, including a BMW M4 and an Audi Arteon e-hybrid. The reviewers noted the surprisingly effective stability control and a brake pedal that, while feeling soft at times, offered better performance and less fade than expected, even outperforming a Tesla Model 3 in this regard. However, the vehicle did suffer from thermal throttling, losing power on straights, and experienced a complete loss of air conditioning. The steering was described as very light, and body oscillations were noticeable. Ultimately, the U5 proved more capable than anticipated, though significant upgrades like performance tires and suspension would be needed for serious track use.
