Consumer Reports has acquired a 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid Premium for testing, offering a first look at its performance and features. The hybrid system, sourced from Toyota but integrated with Subaru's own 2.5L boxer engine and mechanical all-wheel-drive, aims to enhance the already well-regarded Forester redesign. Key improvements noted include a quieter cabin, a slight power increase (194 hp), and standard safety features like blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, which were optional on the gas model. However, the hybrid comes with a higher price tag ($1,700-$3,000 more) and lacks a spare tire, a significant drawback for some. While EPA estimates show improved city MPG, highway gains are minimal, and the RAV4 Hybrid offers better overall fuel economy. Despite these points, the reviewers found the hybrid variant to be the best Forester they've driven, praising its improved ride, handling, and overall driving experience, even with the added weight. The infotainment system's dated software remains a notable downside.
