AMG is officially bringing back the V8 engine, a move confirmed by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius. This marks a significant shift from their recent hybrid and EV strategy, which has been criticized for lacking emotion and driving pleasure, exemplified by the underperforming C63 and GLC 63 models. The new V8 will feature a flat-plane crank design, similar to the GT Black Series, promising higher revs and better response, with integration for mild-hybrid and potentially P2/P3 hybrid systems. The CLE 63 is strongly predicted to be the first model to receive this new V8, with other anticipated recipients including the E63, GLC 63, GLE/GLS 63, SL 63, and S-Class AMG. The C63, however, is not expected to get the V8, possibly receiving a six-cylinder hybrid instead. On the EV front, AMG is developing the AMG.EA platform for dedicated performance EVs, with the first model being a GT 4-door replacement. These EVs will feature innovative modes, including a simulated V8 sound and virtual gear changes, aiming to recapture the enthusiast appeal. The overall strategy aims for a two-pronged approach: powerful V8 combustion engines and exciting, purpose-built EVs.
