The 2024 Subaru Solterra, essentially a rebadged Toyota bZ4X, presents a compelling value proposition, particularly on the used market. While its original MSRP is deemed excessive, heavily discounted trims, especially front-wheel-drive Limited models, can be found for under $30,000, offering a fully loaded SUV experience. However, this value comes with significant compromises. The Solterra suffers from underwhelming range (around 220 miles for AWD Limited) and slow DC fast charging speeds (35-45 minutes for 10-80%), which are further impacted by extreme temperatures. The driving experience is characterized by a soft, floaty suspension and a lack of true one-pedal driving, though the ride is smooth and comfortable for daily commuting. Exterior styling is divisive, with the front end and excessive plastic cladding drawing criticism, while the interior is functional and comfortable, albeit with some odd design choices like the 'booster seat' carpeting. Despite its drawbacks, the Solterra's strong build quality, user-friendly infotainment, and impressive interior space make it a surprisingly attractive option for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing practicality over performance and long-distance capability.
