Rivian has significantly improved the charging performance of its R1S Standard LFP battery with a recent OTA update (2024.23.30). The charging time from 0 to 100% has been reduced to just under 60 minutes, a substantial improvement over the previous generation's 75 minutes. The peak charging speed now reaches approximately 218 kW, holding 200 kW for the first 25% of the charge. While this is a welcome enhancement, the review notes that the charging curve still exhibits some 'stair-stepping' and tapers off to 150 kW by 50% state of charge, falling short of the engineers' initial projections of holding 200 kW to that point. Despite this, the R1S Standard LFP is highlighted as a compelling entry-level option for those seeking a three-row SUV without the premium price of higher-trim models, offering competitive range and charging capabilities that make it a strong contender for road trips.
