The Car and Driver team evaluates three high-performance EVs at Lightning Lap: the Kia EV6 GT, BMW X5 M Competition, and Lucid Air Sapphire. The EV6 GT, despite its power, proved surprisingly challenging to drive on track, exhibiting significant oversteer and twitchiness that made it difficult to set a confident lap time, though it performed well in a straight line. In stark contrast, the BMW X5 M Competition, a large SUV, delivered an astonishingly capable track performance, offering confidence-inspiring handling, impressive grip, and robust brakes, outperforming many expectations and even matching lighter sports cars through certain sections. The Lucid Air Sapphire, a 1,234 horsepower electric sedan, was the most extreme, achieving remarkable straight-line speeds and surprisingly competent cornering, setting new EV and four-door records despite its considerable weight and modest tires. While the EV6 GT struggled with track dynamics, the X5 M impressed with its unexpected agility, and the Lucid Air Sapphire redefined the performance potential of electric sedans.
