EV Channels Review

The latest software update (v1.4.0 / 2503) for the BYD Seal brings a host of welcome quality-of-life improvements and new features. The much-anticipated native EV trip planner is now functional, though it suffers from a significant flaw: recommending non-open access Tesla Superchargers, which could mislead unsuspecting drivers. The addition of the YouTube app and other applications in the BYD store is a great boon for charging downtime. Other notable enhancements include a Google Maps-integrated navigation system with improved search functionality, customizable bottom navigation bars, an auto power-on/off feature, and a PIN to drive security function. While the infotainment system's UI and UX have seen noticeable improvements, particularly with persistent HVAC controls and a more user-friendly settings menu, the instrument cluster remains largely unchanged. During the test drive, the reviewer found the Intelligent Cruise Control and ADAS performance, especially in roundabouts, to be unchanged and still lacking compared to competitors, exhibiting jerky movements and a lack of confidence. Despite these drawbacks, the update brings the Seal's software experience more in line with other BYD models, offering a generally positive, albeit imperfect, step forward.
