Carwow conducted an extensive EV range test, pitting six electric SUVs against each other to see how they perform when driven until empty. The results revealed significant discrepancies between manufacturer claims and real-world range. The Polestar 4 emerged as the clear winner, covering 333 miles (90% of its claimed range) and demonstrating impressive efficiency. The Porsche Macan followed with 318 miles (82%), while the Tesla Model Y achieved 294 miles (79%). The Ford Explorer, Kia EV6, and Audi Q4 e-tron lagged behind, with the Audi being the first to run out of charge at 268 miles (79%). While the Polestar 4 excelled in range, its leasing cost was significantly lower than the Porsche Macan. The test also highlighted the unreliability of public charging infrastructure and the varying performance of EVs once their battery is depleted, with some offering limited 'limp home' modes. The comparison with a Skoda Kodiaq indicated that while EV running costs can be competitive, the initial purchase price and charging convenience remain key considerations.
