While the hybrid powertrain offers excellent fuel economy and the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with X-Mode provides capable grip on dirt and gravel roads, the vehicle struggles with technical off-road challenges. The reviewer highlights its 8.7 inches of ground clearance and short wheelbase as positives, but notes a significant limitation with its 19° approach angle, which hinders its ability on steeper obstacles. The hybrid powertrain's tendency to cut power and the brake-vectoring system's potential to dig holes in soft terrain are identified as drawbacks for serious off-roading. Despite these limitations, the Forester Hybrid is deemed a competent option for light off-road use, dirt roads, and snow, outperforming other hybrids in its class. However, for more extreme trails, Subaru's Wilderness line is recommended as a more suitable alternative. Aftermarket modifications like a rear locker are possible but suggest the vehicle may not be the ideal base for such extensive changes.
