EV Channels Review

Subaru has significantly improved the Solterra, making it a much more compelling EV option. The "all-new" designation is justified with substantial upgrades to suspension, battery, motors, charging, infotainment, and interior design. Off-road capability, a Subaru hallmark, is present with 8.3 inches of ground clearance and an improved X-Mode, though it stops short of true "Wilderness" territory. On-road manners are vastly improved, offering a quieter, more sophisticated ride than the previous generation. The XT trim provides a welcome power boost. However, the user experience is hampered by significant software shortcomings, most notably the lack of route planning and state-of-charge on arrival, which are considered unacceptable for a modern EV. While charging has improved with better thermal management, the absence of these basic software features detracts from an otherwise strong update. The interior sees welcome enhancements, but the infotainment system, while featuring wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, still feels rebadged Toyota/Lexus and lacks polish. Despite these flaws, the updated Solterra is a "good enough" EV for many, especially loyal Subaru customers, but it misses the mark on crucial EV fundamentals.
