The Volkswagen ID.5 is presented as a coupe SUV, a body style the reviewer questions the necessity of. While acknowledging the ID.4's competence, the ID.5 fails to evoke strong positive emotions. Stylistically, it's seen as less striking than its Audi and Skoda counterparts, with the reviewer preferring the ID.4's look. Practicality is a mixed bag; the boot is surprisingly larger than the ID.4's, offering good space and a ski hatch, but rear headroom is tight for taller individuals. The interior, however, is a significant letdown, primarily due to the frustrating and slow infotainment system and poorly executed touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel and dashboard, earning it the nickname 'car of rage'. Performance and refinement are deemed adequate, with a real-world range of around 270 miles in mixed conditions, comparable to rivals. Charging speeds are also on par. The main criticisms are directed at the poor user interface, average dynamics, and a high price point that offers poor value for money when compared to more compelling alternatives like the Kia EV6, Tesla Model Y, Genesis GV60, and even its own stablemate, the Skoda Enyaq. Ultimately, the ID.5 is considered an average car that answers a question nobody asked, failing to be better than its competition.
