The BYD Atto 2 enters the competitive B-segment electric crossover market as a sensible and well-equipped option, though it falls short of being class-leading. While its exterior styling is described as handsome and inoffensive, and the interior is praised for its restrained design, good material quality, and user-friendly features like the rotatable infotainment screen with clever shortcuts, it doesn't truly stand out. Practicality is decent with 400L of boot space and good rear passenger room, but it's less than key rivals. The main criticisms lie in its driving dynamics and efficiency. The chassis tuning is deemed not polished enough, leading to a ride that feels too soft and transmits imperfections, while the steering is overly light for open-road driving. Range and charging speeds are only average, with the base model's 214-mile WLTP range and 82kW charging being particularly disappointing. Despite BYD's battery expertise, the Atto 2's battery technology and performance are not class-leading. Furthermore, its pricing, starting just over £31,000, is not the budget advantage one might expect, especially when compared to larger, more capable rivals like the MG ZS EV or Skoda Karoq. Ultimately, the Atto 2 is a competent car that ticks many boxes but lacks the exceptional qualities needed to truly compete at the top of its segment, especially when rivals offer more for less.
