The GWM Cannon Alpha Plug-in Hybrid presents a compelling, albeit flawed, package for the Australian market. Its standout feature is its exceptional off-road capability, significantly outperforming competitors like the BYD Shark thanks to its reduction gear, low-range transfer case, and diff locks. The hybrid powertrain delivers a potent combined output of 300kW and 750Nm, offering strong performance, especially in Sport mode. The interior impresses with a premium feel, abundant features like heated/cooled/massage seats, and a large infotainment screen, offering a perceived value exceeding its price point. However, the vehicle is not without its drawbacks. The transmission exhibits noticeable lag in Normal mode and can be clunky, requiring software calibration. The integration of the tow bar is a significant issue, sitting too low and negatively impacting departure angles and recovery point access. Furthermore, the lack of a spare tire solution, either under the vehicle or a more integrated tray mount, is a notable oversight. While the ride comfort is good, the semi-autonomous driving systems could be more refined.
