The second generation of Rivian's R1 platform, encompassing the R1T and R1S, represents a significant evolution rather than a mere refresh. While exterior styling remains largely unchanged, the powertrain, electronics, and software have undergone substantial upgrades. Key improvements include a more powerful and efficient in-house developed motor system, a significantly more powerful onboard computer (250 trillion computations per second), and the addition of a heat pump. The most notable enhancement for the end consumer, particularly in the R1S, is the vastly improved ride quality and reduction in NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), addressing a long-standing criticism. While the R1T also benefits, the R1S sees a more dramatic transformation in comfort. The new platform also boasts a more robust sensor suite for advanced driver-assistance systems and a visually stunning new UI powered by Unreal Engine, which existing owners will receive via OTA updates. However, charging times remain merely 'passable,' with 10-80% taking around 40 minutes. Despite the extensive under-the-skin improvements, the average consumer may primarily notice the enhanced ride comfort, while enthusiasts will appreciate the technological leaps. The introduction of a tri-motor configuration, while impressive, is questioned for potentially overcomplicating the lineup.
