After two months and 2500 miles, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV presents a compelling, yet contradictory, package. The reviewer praises its attractive exterior design and comfortable, well-appointed interior, particularly the second row. The all-wheel-drive capability, enhanced by the electric motors, offers excellent off-road performance and a lively feel in certain conditions, surpassing competitors like the RAV4 Prime in this regard. However, the PHEV system's efficiency in hybrid mode is a significant drawback, averaging only 24-26 MPG on the highway, far below its EV range potential. Charging is also slow, with a 3.7kW onboard charger taking 6.5 hours for a full charge. The third row, while appreciated for its availability, is extremely cramped and compromises rear legroom due to battery placement. Quirks like the engine turning on in cold weather or when using regenerative braking paddles with a full battery are noted. Despite its flaws, the Outlander PHEV is positioned as an EV with a backup plan, offering a comfortable ride and surprising off-road prowess, though its real-world hybrid fuel economy and charging speed are key considerations.
