The 2022 Mazda MX-30 marks Mazda's initial foray into the electric vehicle market, built upon the CX-30 platform. While it retains Mazda's signature fun-to-drive dynamics and premium interior feel, its electric credentials fall significantly short of modern expectations. The primary drawbacks are its meager 100-mile range and a modest 143 horsepower output from its single front-mounted motor. The interior, however, is a highlight, featuring sustainable materials like recycled PET bottles and cork, alongside a unique design with a floating center stack and a 7.5-inch climate control screen. Despite its stylish appearance and engaging driving dynamics, the MX-30 is criticized for its limited range, slow DC fast charging capability (up to 50 kW), and a relatively high price point, especially when compared to competitors like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt, which offer substantially more range for a similar or lower cost. Mazda's strategy appears to be a 'compliance car' while they develop a more robust EV platform for 2025, offering a loaner program for longer trips as a workaround. Ultimately, the MX-30 is positioned as a niche urban commuter, best suited for those prioritizing Mazda's design and driving ethos over outright EV performance and range.
